“Great art also requires great patrons, and the economics of the market could never have produced the profusion of stunning works that now fill the Uffizi Gallery.” —Wilfred M. McClay This Trinity Forum Update features our Winter reading (now in press), an Academy conference with Os Guinness and Doug Holladay, and some recent items on our web journal, several of which focus on the arts. Year-End Reading: Malcolm MuggeridgeNote: If you are considering bulk orders of this Reading for use as your Christmas or year-end greetings and would like to preview the text, please contact our office for a PDF version. The winter Trinity Forum Reading selection is “A Spiritual Pilgrimage” by Malcolm Muggeridge. Two chapters from his autobiography, Conversion: The Spiritual Journey of a Twentieth-Century Pilgrim are introduced by Senior Fellow and Founding Chairman Alonzo L. McDonald. Muggeridge (1903–1990) was, at various points in his life, a teacher, journalist, soldier-spy, foreign correspondent, television personality, pilgrim, and public voice for Jesus. McDonald summarizes the story of a full life—excessive, unconventional, world-spanning—and presents Muggeridge to us as a twentieth-century “everyman” following a path as old as Solomon’s in Ecclesiastes. Muggeridge’s Conversion is written in a style that evokes Augustine’s Confessions. He looks back on his life from the perspective of a late convert to the Christian faith (famously influenced by his encounter with Mother Teresa), retelling his journey and some of the lessons learned. Our selections focus on his conversion as well as on his deeply moving and provocative meditations on the prospect of death. This brief Reading offers an opportunity to step back and see one life in full perspective, revealing not only questions to consider but glimpses of a path we might want to explore ourselves. This Reading booklet has a white cover with gold foil lettering and includes a discussion guide and suggestions for further reading. Now in press, it will be available at the beginning of December 2007. Pre-orders are available now at our online store.
