Great Books and the Good Life

The Trinity Forum, Montgomery Bell Academy, and St. Paul Christian Academy are delighted to invite you to an Evening Conversation with literary scholar Dr. Karen Swallow Prior on the themes from her newly released book On Reading Well: Finding the Good Life Through Great Books.

In the midst of today's current confusion over what makes for a meaningful and successful life, Prior claims that great literature clarifies and inspires a way forward. Learning to read great literature not only reveals the consequences of virtue and vice, but also increases readers' knowledge of and desire for the good life. During this Evening Conversation, Prior will explore why learning how to read wisely and well has the power to cultivate the character so desperately needed today.

Karen Swallow Prior is a Professor of English at Liberty University, where she has won multiple teaching awards. She writes frequently on literature, culture, ethics, and ideas. Her writing appears at The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Christianity Today, First Things, Vox, Think Christian, The Gospel Coalition, Books and Culture and other places. Her earlier books include Booked: Literature in the Soul of Me and Fierce Convictions: The Extraordinary Life of Hannah More—Poet, Reformer, Abolitionist

Dr. Prior completed her Ph.D. at the State University of New York at Buffalo and her undergraduate studies at Daemen College in Amherst, New York. She is a Research Fellow with the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, a Senior Fellow with the Trinity Forum and Liberty University’s Center for Apologetics and Cultural Engagement, and a member of the Faith Advisory Council of the Humane Society of the United States.
